My dad's recovery has me worried sick

After his knee surgery dad's been resting for weeks. Yesterday he complained about calf pain and redness out of nowhere. Nurses aren't available until Thursday. What are the real signs of deep vein thrombosis to watch for? Really need to know what's urgent vs what can wait.

Calf pain + redness post-surgery is one of those combos you really don't want to dismiss. My uncle had almost identical symptoms after hip replacement and our family kept thinking it was just normal soreness. It wasn't, ended up being a clot caught thankfully before it traveled anywhere.

Key things to watch: is the calf swollen compared to the other leg, warm to touch, or does the skin look slightly bluish/red in patches? Pain that gets worse when he flexes his foot upward is also a flag. early stage blood clot in leg symptoms vs muscle cramp  covers exactly what's urgent vs what can wait, which is precisely what you need right now.

If swelling is spreading or he gets any chest tightness or shortness of breath, skip Thursday and go to ER immediately. Don't second-guess that one. Hoping it turns out to be nothing serious, sending good vibes to your dad
