How do you encrypt EBS volumes?

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides block-level storage for use with EC2 instances. To protect your data, AWS allows you to encrypt EBS volumes using AWS Key Management Service (KMS). Encryption ensures that data at rest, disk I/O, and snapshots are all secured without impacting performance. Understanding how encryption works is a key part of cloud security and is often emphasized in structured programs like AWS Classes in Pune.

When creating a new EBS volume, you can enable encryption by selecting the default AWS-managed key or a customer-managed key (CMK). This can be done via the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or SDKs. The encrypted volume can then be attached to EC2 instances normally. Those undergoing an AWS Training in Pune often gain hands-on experience in configuring EBS encryption using these tools.

Encrypting existing unencrypted volumes involves creating a snapshot, copying it with encryption enabled, and then creating a new volume from the encrypted snapshot. This approach is commonly practiced during an AWS Course in Pune, reinforcing real-world implementation skills.
